I came to Grand Rapids early in 1973 to visit a good friend, and left about 33 years later. My friend Jim was going to school at Grand Valley State Colleges. Jim was living in an apartment in a large old home on the corner of Michigan and College NE, across the street from Trill’s Texaco.
Once I decided to stay and attend GVSC, we needed to find a place with space for a bed for both of us. We found an apartment in a building at 220 Eastern SE. I believe the rent was $90 per month.
In June of 1973 Ann showed up at the door and needed a place to stay.
I have a lasting memory of this place. When going to the bathroom or kitchen in the night we would have a tennis shoe in hand, flip on the light and try to whack the roaches.
